Automated external defibrillators (AEDs)

When a person's heart stops beating, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can restart it. AEDs can help save lives.

AEDs are compact, portable devices that can:
- Examine the individual's cardiac rhythm
- Assess if a shock is required.
- Assist the rescuer through the process using voice or screen cues.

 Selecting an automated external defibrillator

 Not all AEDs are the same, even though they all shock the heart with electricity. AEDs are able to: 
- Have automatic or semi-automatic characteristics (a shock button that delivers the shock without human intervention)
- Offer "coaching" to assist users in doing CPR breathing and compressions. 
- Come with electrode pads that can be used on children under the age of eight or weighing less than 25 kg.
