Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

When a person's heart stops beating, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can restart it. AEDs can help save lives.

AEDs are compact, portable devices that can:

- Examine the individual's cardiac rhythm
- Assess if a shock is required.
- Assist the rescuer through the process using voice or screen cues.

 Selecting an automated external defibrillator

Not all AEDs are the same, even though they all shock the heart with electricity. AEDs are able to:

- Have automatic or semi-automatic characteristics (a shock button that delivers the shock without human intervention)
- Offer "coaching" to assist users in doing CPR breathing and compressions.
- Come with electrode pads that can be used on children under the age of eight or weighing less than 25 kg.

Questions to consider before purchasing an AED:

What is the total cost of ownership?

Find out what the initial kit includes and the exact replacement costs for electrode pads and batteries, as these expire and must be replaced.

What is the lifespan of the pads and batteries?

Battery life typically ranges from 2 to 7 years, while pads usually last 2 to 5 years depending on the brand and model.

Does it offer CPR coaching?

Most devices provide voice prompts, visual displays, or a metronome to guide you through pushing at the right depth and rate. You may want to look at demo videos of the units to get a sense for the quality of the automated coaching.

Are there child/pediatric options?

If the unit will be in a location where children are present, check if pediatric pads or a pediatric "key/attenuator" are required, or if the device has an easy-to-flip child mode.

Is data download included if used?

If the device is ever used in a cardiac emergency, in some models you can download the incident data for doctors. Find out if the manufacturer or supplier charges for this service or if the unit offers an app or desktop based software.

What is the IP (Ingress Protection) rating?

If you are storing the AED near an indoor pool, in the trunk of a car, or on a construction site, ask about dust and water resistance.
